Indicators and patterns

Plain meanings for scores, tags, and pattern names in the app.

Swing Edge shows research scan results only. Nothing here is a buy, sell, or hold suggestion. Always check the chart and your own plan before any decision.

Step-by-step

  1. Scores

Total score, Base Q, Vol Q, Fail risk, RS rank, and decision quality are separate inputs to the card sort — not one hidden number.

  2. Stages

Stage 1–4 labels follow Weinstein-style trend buckets: basing (1), uptrend (2), top (3), decline (4). Stage 2 variants mark early vs established uptrends.

  3. Pattern names

VCP, cup-and-handle, Darvas box, HTF, etc. map to rule sets in the scan — see /patterns/ for longer definitions.

  4. Signal labels

Very Strong through Weak are score-band shorthand on cards. They describe the row, not an action.

  5. Tags vs scores

Tags (Vol Dry, Active Breakout) describe shape; scores quantify blend factors. Both can appear on one card.

Detailed reference

RS rank

0–100 vs other names in the same scan. Higher means stronger relative performance in that cross-section.

Volume quality (Vol Q)

Summarizes volume shape — dry-up in a base, surge on a break, etc.

Base quality (Base Q)

How tight and shallow the base looked to the rules.

Failure risk

Flags for false breaks, late bases, or stretched price in the model.

Readiness and decision quality

Extra labels that combine pivot distance and other fields. They sort the list — they are not trade instructions.

Common tags

  • VCP — shrinking pullbacks and lower volume.
  • Vol Dry — lighter volume on the right of the base.
  • Active Breakout — break confirmed in scan rules.
  • Breakout Retest — pull back to pivot after a break.
  • HTF — high tight flag pattern flag.
  • Darvas Box — break above box top.
